Class 11 English – God Sees the Truth, But Waits Summary

Leo Tolstoy’s short story “God Sees the Truth, But Waits” is about Ivan Dimitrich Aksionov, a young merchant from Vladimir, Russia. Aksionov had a happy life with his wife and children, running two shops and enjoying singing. However, his life took a tragic turn when he was falsely accused of murdering another merchant and robbing him of twenty thousand rubles.

Aksionov was arrested, tried, and sentenced to 26 years in a Siberian prison. His wife and children visited him in prison, but his reputation as a criminal made life difficult for him. However, Aksionov found solace in his faith and spent his days reading religious texts and singing in church. He even gained the respect of his fellow prisoners, who called him “Grandfather” or “the Saint.”

One day, a new prisoner named Makar Semyonich arrived, and Aksionov discovered that Makar was the true murderer. Aksionov did not reveal this information, and instead forgave Makar. When soldiers discovered a tunnel that Makar had dug, Aksionov did not implicate him. Makar eventually confessed to the crime and begged for Aksionov’s forgiveness, but Aksionov had already died.

The story illustrates the power of faith, forgiveness, and the idea that God sees the truth, even if justice is not immediately served. Aksionov’s faith sustained him throughout his years in prison, and his forgiveness of Makar ultimately led to Makar’s confession and redemption.
